Seeking wisdom for your community

The book of James is full of great wisdom! It also gives us instruction on seeking the wisdom of God. As we are less than 10 days away from election season in America, there is never a greater time to seek the wisdom from our heavenly Father. Whether you have casted an early ballot or waiting for the big day, be challenged to seek guidance from God.

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

James 3:13-17 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

During noon time prayer this week pray for wisdom.

  1. Pray that God grants you wisdom in how to vote.
  2. Pray that you would have wisdom in what is best for your local community.
  3. Pray that elected officials would seek God’s wisdom.

Remember, instructions for the prayer movement are simple:

  1. Set your alarm/reminder on your device for 12 Noon EST each day for prayer. You only need to spend 3-5 minutes in corporate prayer with us. If you aren’t able to pray at 12 Noon EST, NO PROBLEM! Just pick a consistent time of prayer each day.
  2. Use the weekly blog/email as a template of how we are praying for the week. It will include a scripture reference + 3 key points to pray.

Praying for America

If you have noticed a pattern in the past several months of praying with us, it is not coincidence. Not only does it seem to be the natural desire of our hearts, but we find it repeated in scripture. Our prayers continue this week for the salvation of those who lead us and have been put into authority.

Unfortunately in a world of politics, we often vilify those we are in disagreement with. This is not to say that evil isn’t present in our world, but that we sometimes forget that everyone on earth is in need of one thing: Christ. Only the Holy Spirit is able to transform hearts. We have been mandated by Christ to proclaim the gospel (good news). What does it mean to proclaim? The greek word used here, kēryssō, means to herald. Herald is just a messenger (noun) or to bring a message of good tidings, announce, or foretell (verb).

Christ has instructed us in Mark 16:15 to be messengers of His truth. We are to announce Christ birth, life, death, burial, and resurrection. The good news brings life and hope. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No comes to the Father except through Christ. When we think about all that Christ has saved us from as individuals, our heart should be jumping to HERALD that same message to those who don’t know Him. Yes… even those in opposition to our own political or cultural beliefs. Yes… even those in opposition to our own moral standards.

Where does this discussion lead us? Once again we are met with a desire to pray those in leadership would be in right standing with God through a relationship with Jesus. A few weeks ago we prayed 1 Timothy 2. In continuance with that scripture, we have compiled a list of authorities. Obviously they are different for each community, but will you pray for them this week to know Jesus and acknowledge Him as Lord over their life?

Here’s a break-down of how to pray this week:

  1. Monday: Federal Government (President, Vice President, Cabinet Members, Congressional Leaders, Supreme Court Justices)
  2. Tuesday: State Government (Governor, Executive Leaders, Legislative Leaders, Judicial Leaders)
  3. Wednesday: Local Government (Mayor, City Counsel, Police Chief, Fire Chief, Judges, County Officials)
  4. Thursday: Military (And he set combat commanders over the people and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him, for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles. -2 Chronicles 32:6-8, emphasis added).
  5. Friday: Schools (School Board, Superintendents, Principals, Faculty and Staff)
  6. Saturday: Pray for your boss. If you are a business owner, pray that you walk in the wisdom and integrity of the Lord.

How to prayerfully bless your city

For the past few months we have been seeking God and praying for our communities and country. We have taken the word of God and applied to our prayers. As we continue that theme and praying for the upcoming elections in America, we find ourselves in the wisdom of Proverbs.

By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown. – Proverbs 11:11

If you are like me, so many thoughts so threw my mind concerning this piece of wisdom. I paused for a good moment of reflection to ask myself if I was being a blessing to the place God has planted me?

Jeremiah 29:4-7 provides more insight: “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. (emphasis added).

Brothers and sisters in Christ, reading the great wisdom literature of Proverbs and studying Jeremiah’s to the exiles, provides a great example of how we should be approaching our communities and country. No matter where you are planted.

How can we use Proverbs 11 to pray this week?

  1. God I thank you that I am able to be a blessing to (community you reside in). Through the love and humility demonstrated by Christ, may my life represent Christ calling to love God and love people.
  2. Pray for the community you are in. For leaders to have a relationship with Christ. For leaders to seek to glorify God in their service.
  3. Pray that Christ would be made known through the witness and service of this followers.

As you pray this week, specifically call out your community and the leaders by name.

How to specifically pray for elected officials

This is our third week of praying for the upcoming elections in America. Last week we specifically prayed for “kings and high officials”. For the past couple of weeks, we have made list of elected position or specific officials to pray for. This week we will continue to pray for those in elected officials with a specific prayer over their life.

Proverbs is a book full or wisdom and seeking wisdom. Proverbs 1 teaches us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. As we have been praying for those in authority to have a relationship with Christ, we can also be praying for their wisdom.

To know wisdom and instruction,
    to understand words of insight,
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
    in righteousness, justice, and equity;
to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth—
Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,
the words of the wise and their riddles. (Proverbs 1:1-6)

Start your prayer by inserting the name of an elected official and then pray Psalm 1:1-6 over their life. It is often difficult to pray for those you may not have voted for, but God is more concerned with their soul than our votes. Let’s stand united in praying for those in positions on federal, state, and local level.

  1. Pick an elected official for each day of the week to pray for.
  2. Spend 2-3 minutes calling that elected official by name and repeating Psalm 1 over them.
  3. Pray that your heart would be softened to their need/desire for Christ.

Remember, instructions for the prayer movement are simple:

How to pray for leaders

Election Day is quickly approaching in America. In six weeks, thousands of leadership positions all across America will be renewed or replaced. As the time draws closer it’s inevitable that election campaigns become more intense and often division and strife ensues.

Psalm 1 reads: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.”

In the next few weeks, we will be providing prayers for America. Specifically for the elected officials.

How can you use Psalm 1 to pray for the leaders?

  1. Specifically call out a particular elected position (not a person, but the position) and pray they receive counsel from the word of God.
  2. Pray that position would be blessed in their pursuit of God’s word.
  3. Pray they would be delighted to know God’s word and be in right standing with God.

This week as we reflect on Psalm 1 in our own life, we can also use this as a specific prayer for those around us. Make a list of elected positions that you want to begin praying over for the next 6 weeks.
